Celebrating 25 Years of Empowering Young Minds

As we mark the end of another academic year, Girl Power Rocks proudly celebrates a significant milestone—our 25th year of dedicated service to the girls of Miami-Dade County. Since our inception in 2000, we've been committed to nurturing today's girls and building tomorrow's leaders.

Throughout this school year, our programs have provided a safe and supportive environment where girls can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. Our After School Program offers enriching activities such as dance, music, art, theatre, journal writing, sports, life skills workshops, community service projects, field trips, college tours, etiquette lessons, and supportive parent groups.

Additionally, our evidence-based initiatives like the Girls Intervention Program Plus (GIPP) and Sister Circle Mentoring have played a pivotal role in helping girls overcome challenges and develop essential life skills.

As we reflect on a quarter-century of impact, we're inspired by the resilience and growth of the girls we've served.
Here's to 25 years of making a difference—and to many more ahead!

Now More Than Ever:

Why Your Support Matters

In today's economic climate, where federal budgets are tightening and traditional funding streams are under threat, organizations like Girl Power Rocks are increasingly vital. As these cuts and dwindling resources continue to affect community programs nationwide, the organization’s work in uplifting young girls and families is more important than ever.
Since its inception, Girl Power Rocks has been on the frontlines of community empowerment. Through initiatives such as mentorship programs, educational assistance, and holistic counseling, including substance abuse support, Girl Power Rocks not only instills confidence but also equips at-promise girls with the tools to succeed despite adversity. With every success story, the organization reaffirms the transformative power of community support.

Recent shifts in the funding landscape make this moment particularly critical. A changing climate and uncertain appropriations have forced many nonprofits to look to private donors and community partnerships for support. The Miami Foundation recently hosted the State of Black Philanthropy Week of Giving, to support Overtown nonprofits by engaging local donors, demonstrating that community-driven philanthropy can help fill essential gaps left by reduced federal support.
As the local community grapples with economic pressures and funding shortfalls, the call to action is clear: It’s time to rally behind those working to make a difference. Supporting Girl Power Rocks now means investing in a future built on the promise and potential of every young girl they serve.
AT GIRL POWER ROCKS
What's Happening

On April 29, 2025, Girl Power Rocks unveiled the Florida Girls Databook, a groundbreaking study spotlighting the experiences of Florida’s 1.3 million "at-promise" girls. This comprehensive research reveals that 65% of these girls live in distress or crisis circumstances, over 58% feel sad or depressed daily, and 44% have contemplated suicide in the past year.

These sobering statistics underscore the urgency of our mission. We invite you to download the Databook, explore the findings, and join us in advocating for the support and resources these girls need to thrive.

Local Solutions, Global Impact
Words From Our Founder

Over the past 25 years, Girl Power has made a powerful local impact, transforming the lives of more than 10,000 at-promise girls and young women whose futures were at risk due to harm, self-harm, or lack of support. Through our programs, which include sex trafficking and violence prevention, mentoring, mental health support, life skills development, and college and career readiness, we’ve provided critical guidance and protection.

While our work begins locally, its relevance is global. At-promise girls around the world face increasing risks that threaten their well-being and limit their potential. Although exact global figures are hard to pinpoint, the need for effective intervention is undeniable.
Addressing these issues locally requires rigorous research, strategic partnerships, and ongoing support. Tackling them globally demands an even broader, more holistic approach, one that confronts systemic inequities, including racism, gender inequality, and discrimination, while simultaneously providing targeted support and empowerment for at-promise girls.
The World Health Organization, which plays a vital role in protecting vulnerable populations, reported in July 2024 that adolescent girls face alarming rates of intimate partner violence. In March 2025, the organization further emphasized that building a healthier world by women and for women is essential to achieving gender equality.
Closer to home, the Florida Girls Databook (an initiative of Girl Power Rocks’ Florida Girls Initiative), launched in April 2025, revealed that two-thirds of girls in Florida live under circumstances that threaten their futures.
Many are economically disadvantaged, struggling academically, experiencing daily sadness or depression, contemplating suicide, and living in poverty. This comparative research by Girl Power and the World Health Organization highlights how deeply interconnected the experiences of girls are—locally and globally.
As we continue to advocate for at-promise girls, we are not only removing barriers locally, but we are also building a global network of empowerment. Through education, access to resources, and unwavering support, we strive to create a more just and equitable world for all at-promise girls.

Words from Kind Kathy
1. Be Intentional
Don’t let self-care be an afterthought. Schedule time for yourself just like you would a meeting or appointment. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a quiet cup of tea, or a good book—make it a priority.
2. Unplug to Reconnect
Take a break from screens and social media. Use that time to reconnect with nature, loved ones, or even your own thoughts. A digital detox can do wonders for your mental clarity.
3. Do What Brings You Joy
Whether it’s gardening, painting, dancing, or simply doing nothing—lean into what makes you feel alive. Joy is a powerful form of self-care.
Let this summer be a season of restoration. You’ve given so much—now it’s time to give back to yourself.
With kindness,
Kind Kathy

What’s Next? A Summer of Self-Care

Each Friday, I have the joy of sharing a little inspiration from Kind Kathy during our staff meetings. As we wrap up another incredible year, May 29th marked the final day of programming for Girl Power’s Girls Rock After School and GIPP programs. What a journey it’s been!
At a recent staff meeting, Kind Kathy posed a thoughtful question: “What’s Next?”
Now that the school year has come to a close, what is one thing you can do to make this summer truly awesome?
The overwhelming response?
Self-care.
So, I ask you again—What’s next for you?
As you step into summer, here are three self-care tips to help you recharge, reflect, and rejuvenate:
Student Spotlight:
Rockstar Scholars Shine Bright
During our End-of-the-Year Celebration Field Trip, we had the honor of recognizing two extraordinary young scholars who exemplify what it means to be a Girl Power Rockstar. Out of all participants across all our programs, only three were selected for this special recognition—and two of them received their awards in person on this memorable day.
These bright and determined students maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher throughout the entire academic year, demonstrating not only academic excellence, but resilience, consistency, and a powerful commitment to their futures.

Their passion for learning and perseverance against the odds serve as a reminder of why Girl Power Rocks exists—to uplift, inspire, and prepare girls to succeed, no matter the challenges.
🎖 Let’s hear it for our Rockstar Scholars—you make us proud!
