Girl Power Chosen for PPG Industries Colorful Communities Initiative

MIAMI, FL – PPG Industries, a leading supplier of paints, coatings, and specialty materials, selected Girl Power as this year’s Colorful Communities™ recipient.

Colorful Communities™ is PPG’s 10-year, $10 million commitment to bring together “PPG volunteers, local nonprofits, government organizations, PPG products and financial support to transform spaces and lives in communities around the world.”

On Sunday, January 19, 2020, PPG’s top 100 executives from all over the globe traveled to Miami to help beautify Richmond Heights Middle School, one of the sites for the Girls Rock After School Program and Summer Camp. Hello! Destination Management facilitated the community service and interpersonal connections that flourished that day.

The PPG volunteers added a fresh coat of paint to the STEM lab classrooms and the school’s peace room, and also landscaped the front of the school.

Apart from PPG volunteers beautifying the school, participants from the Girls Rock After School Program were a part of the day of service as well. The girls painted a mural on a canvas for their classroom and packed backpacks for children at a homeless shelter. They also spent time talking to women that work in PPG’s STEM department, gaining valuable insight about their future career options.

Schools in low-income districts often lack the proper funding for supplies and student resources. By beautifying Richmond Heights Middle School, PPG helped to build a renewed sense of pride and protection for students, teachers, and the greater community.

In addition to volunteering their time, PPG donated a $25,000 grant to Girl Power to support their various empowerment programs and $25,000 to Richmond Heights Middle School. They also committed to get bikes for the girls in the Girls Rock After School Program and furniture for their classroom.

Generous companies like PPG Industries help Girl Power to maintain and grow the integrity of their gender specific empowerment programs. Together, PPG and Girl Power are working toward the goal of “Improving Our World, One Girl at a Time.”
