Mama Hattie's House

Mama Hattie's House is a social, educational and residential complex that will provide a safe and stable environment for at-risk girls 24 hours a day.

Why Mama Hattie’s House is Needed...

In the State of Florida 30% of juvenile arrests are girls.

30% of girls have changed homes 10 or more times in childhood.

50% of girls struggle with low academic performance.

49% of girls incarcerated indicated they have engaged in self mutilation.

Girls are the fast growing population in the juvenile justice system.

Close to 75% of girls in the juvenile justice system have histories of physical abuse, compared to the approximate rate of 20% in general population.

Among a sample of female juvenile offenders, 70% had been exposed to some form of trauma.

The Complex will be designed to accomplish the following objectives:

• Provide a secured 24 hour safe haven and residential facility for girls who have encountered sexual and/or physical abuse, parental abandonment, drug ad diction or who are under the jurisdiction of the State.
• Provide Alternative to Suspension services for Girls who are serving outdoor school suspension from Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
• Provide linkage to employment through academic, occupational and service-learning for female High Schools Drop-outs.
• Provide After-School Prevention and Retention Services to stay in school for at-risk girls in Miami-Dade County.

Complex Description

1st Floor

• 3 Academic classrooms for day and after school program to accommodate 75 to 100 girls daily.
• 1 Health & Wellness classroom to accommodate fitness equipment, dance, yoga, arts and crafts classrooms.
• Reception area.
• Multipurpose area large enough to accommodate tables and chairs to seat a minimum of 150 people.
• Industrial kitchen, dinning and pantry areas.
