To empower girls and their families to succeed in order to protect, restore and preserve the family unit.
Improving Our World One Girl at a Time
Girl Power! is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit prevention and intervention social change program that promotes positive behavior, enhances social skills and improves academic performance in at-risk girls ages 11 – 17. Established in 2000 by the World Literacy Crusade (WLC) of Florida – an international, non-profit, community literacy program – Girl Power! encourages young girls to build confidence, competence and pride within themselves. We also provide workshops and materials that inform girls about the risk and consequences associated with substance abuse, low self-esteem, lack of education and more.
Our
Program Objectives:
- Prevent/reduce truancy, academic failure, and school suspension among middle school girls.
- Prevent/reduce the number of middle school girls entering into the juvenile justice system.
- Improve overall academic performance among program participants.
Did You Know?
In 2006 the National Council on Crime and Delinquency (NCCD) conducted
the study "A Rallying Cry for Change: Charting a New Direction in the
State of Florida's Response to Girls in the Juvenile Justice System." This study surveyed at-risk, adolescent girls and offered tremendous insight
into their plight – Here are just a few of the findings:
- 40% of girls surveyed committed their first offense before the age of 13
- 70% experience family issues/conflict
- 79% suffered from emotional issues (depression, anger, self-defeating behavior)
- 37% were abused by a parent, 55% by a non-parent, 25% by both
- 35% were pregnant or had been in the past
- 42% of all youth incarcerations are girls 15 years old or younger
The study suggested that comprehensive and safe environments specifically designed
for girls in grades 6, 7, and 8 must be funded, developed and evaluated
immediately.
Girl Power! is one of these environments… It’s a safe, nurturing,
supportive, uplifting place that provides girls with educational tutoring
and emotional stability, to empower them so they will become productive
women in the future.
